They should change the name from MS hug to MS straightjacket, much more descriptive. By the way, the site uses the term “straightjacket.” In my opinion, this gives them some street cred in the MS community. ![]() I explored the myofascial release website pretty thoroughly and never did find the bit about somehow harnessing my MS hug to shoot electricity out of my fingertips. Thereby, the principle of piezoelectricity is applied - the idea that “a low load (gentle pressure) applied slowly will allow a viscoelastic medium (fascia) to elongate.” Viscoeleastic? Stretch! Also cool! The myofascial technique taught by PT Barnes (not to be confused with hoax showman Phineas Taylor “PT” Barnum, despite the circus of symptoms that MS employs) involves applying gentle and sustained pressure to the web of fascia, with the goal of pain relief and increased mobility. According to an explanation of this approach, “Trauma, inflammatory responses, and/or surgical procedures create myofascial restrictions that can produce tensile pressures of approximately 2,000 pounds per square inch on pain sensitive structures that do not show up in many of the standard tests (X-rays, myelograms, CT scans, electromyography, etc.).” The myofascial release approach was created by physical therapist (PT) John F. At this point, I backed my fluffy tail back out of the rabbit hole and refocused on the task at hand. Or (nerd alert) did it Surge through my mind? I stopped myself from taking a side tunnel to see if the brothers were related to Marie Curie, but did pause briefly to munch on a carrot while pondering the fact that it took the waging of World War I for science to find a practical application of piezoelectricity and create the sonar device. Visions of X-Men flashed through my mind. When reversed, an outer electrical field either stretches or compresses the piezoelectric material.”Ĭool. The most effective of these were quartz and Rochelle salt.Īccording to Nanomotion’s impressively scientific piezoelectric effect article (that I struggled to understand): “When piezoelectric material is placed under mechanical stress, a shifting of the positive and negative charge centers in the material takes place, which then results in an external electrical field. The next thing I knew, I was reading about how brothers Pierre and Jacques Curie demonstrated the first piezoelectric effect by using crystals of tourmaline, quartz, topaz, cane sugar, and Rochelle salt. This is where you’ll hear terms such as immersiveness and realism enter the conversation. If anything is even a little off we can usually tell. This is more difficult than it sounds, since our senses and brains are evolved to provide us with a finely synchronised and mediated experience. These are used to actually stimulate our senses together in order to create the illusion of reality. ![]() There are a range of systems that are used for this purpose, such as headsets, omni-directional treadmills and special gloves. How is virtual reality achieved?Īlthough we talk about a few historical early forms of virtual reality elsewhere on the site, today virtual reality is usually implemented using computer technology. That person becomes part of this virtual world or is immersed within this environment and whilst there, is able to manipulate objects or perform a series of actions. Virtual reality is the term used to describe a three-dimensional, computer generated environment which can be explored and interacted with by a person. In technical terms…Īnswering “what is virtual reality” in technical terms is straight-forward. So, in summary, virtual reality entails presenting our senses with a computer generated virtual environment that we can explore in some fashion. Something we would refer to as a virtual reality. You would be presented with a version of reality that isn’t really there, but from your perspective it would be perceived as real. It stands to reason then, that if you can present your senses with made-up information, your perception of reality would also change in response to it. In other words, our entire experience of reality is simply a combination of sensory information and our brains sense-making mechanisms for that information. These other sensory inputs, plus some special processing of sensory information by our brains ensures that we have a rich flow of information from the environment to our minds.Įverything that we know about our reality comes by way of our senses. The truth is that humans have many more senses than this, such as a sense of balance for example. These are however only our most obvious sense organs. In school we all learned that we have five senses: taste, touch, smell, sight and hearing. ![]() We know the world through our senses and perception systems. This could, of course, mean anything but it usually refers to a specific type of reality emulation. So the term ‘virtual reality’ basically means ‘near-reality’. The definition of ‘virtual’ is near and reality is what we experience as human beings. The definition of virtual reality comes, naturally, from the definitions for both ‘virtual’ and ‘reality’. ![]() The company says that versions for Mac and PC desktop apps are on their way, too. From the East Coast, we tested it out with a pair of brave volunteers - one on the West Coast, and one in the middle of the country. (We recommend the first approach.) How well does Watch Together for Plex work? ![]() For now, at least, there's no way to chat with your friends within the Plex app, so you'll either need to use a separate app to keep up your conversations, establish a telepathic mind-meld with your fellow viewers, or just endure a lot of awkward pausing and un-pausing at random. Once the movie starts, any of the viewers can pause or resume it at any point. But it's probably more polite to wait for everyone to indicate that they're ready, at which point Plex will start playing the movie automatically. While you watch your friends' statuses shift from "Invited" to "Buffering…" to "Ready," you can choose to start playing the movie and let your tardy friends catch up. Plex will take you to a lobby screen and send invitations to your friends to join you. |
